Celebrating the applications of engineering research in everyday life

The University of Cardiff and Graphic Science Ltd, with support from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), invite you to be part of the Engineering for Life photography competition. We have now extended the deadline for entry to 31st May 2010. Anyone is eligible to apply, for free, as long as they are resident in the UK.

Show us how developments in engineering have impacted your quality of life: from ensuring the health and safety of you and your family, increasing the ease with which you enjoy your lifestyle or through enhancing your sports performance. You don’t need scientific knowledge or engineering expertise to enter this competition. Anybody can take part. We want you to look within your own lives and find out what the applications of engineering research mean to you. Here are just a few examples of engineering for life research: sports medicine; knee replacement; analysing the movement of human joints; biomechanics of the spine; medical imaging such as ultrasound, MRI scanning and whole body scanners; the design of wheelchair seats and other technologies which are of benefit to the elderly or infirm.

There is also a great deal of contemporary research into engineering which prevents injury and improves performance in sport. What all this research has in common is that the technologies which have been developed as a result of this research all play a role in our every day lives and their affects can be felt by you, whether at work, play or in your own home. Enter your image now and you could be in with a chance of winning a £1000 cash prize! Winners will be named across five categories, each of whom will be awarded a runner up cash prize of £500. The overall winning entry will win a cash prize of £1000. The winning entries, along with runners up from each category will be exhibited at the Engineering for Life exhibition, which will take place in Cardiff, Wales in early 2010.The categories are:

  • Most creative interpretation of the brief

  • Best technical image

  • Best manipulated image
