The Red Gum Shield

- Competition Winner & winner of Best Technical Image Category

taken by Stephen Garnett, in North Yorks

Justification for Engineering for Life:

"Tough at the Pit Face - Second row Forwards, Alistair Allen and Antony capstick cut a striking portrait with the Red Gum shield standing out brightly against their mud covered faces. Mouthguards or "gum shields" were originally developed in 1890 by Woolf Krause, a London dentist, as a means of protecting boxers from lip lacerations. Such injuries were a common and often disabling accompaniment of boxing contests in that era. Moving forward over a hundred years the Customised Mouth Guard engineered in a Pressure lamination machine offers safety with precision."
