news The Ambassadors Reception 2010

On 22nd July 2010, we held our 2nd annual Ambassadors’ Reception to show recognition and to celebrate excellence, and the sharing of ideas, amongst STEM Ambassadors in the West of England region (Bristol and Bath).

STEM Ambassadors joined us for wine and a hot buffet and were given the opportunity to network, share demonstrations or activities and even have a look around the zoo after hours.

We rounded the evening off with a prize giving ceremony. The award for Most Dedicated STEM Ambassador (Bristol & Bath) was given to Rob Pattison of the Ministry of Defence (MoD) for his commitment to the scheme. He is our main point of contact at the MoD and has helped us recruit over 30 STEM Ambassadors who have each gone onto do activities in schools. He was also involved in developing a workshop to support ‘How Science Works’ at The Grange School, looking at protective materials, which he has now delivered several times in both primary and secondary schools.

The award for Most Dedicated STEM Employer went to Atkins, who have an Engineering Awareness Group through which they support the STEM Ambassadors scheme by providing engineers to go into schools. We have 50-60 ambassadors from Atkins who help us deliver all sorts of activities. Atkins is very supportive of ambassador and also run a mentoring scheme with secondary schools in Patchway, Henbury and Bradley Stoke. Our main point of contact Vicky Blunt is always very helpful when we need ambassadors at short notice. The award was collected by Atkins STEM Ambassadors Kate Martin and Alvan Herbert.

Guests also voted for the ‘Best Demo’ prize which was awarded to David Sharratt from Astrazeneca, for his Fire Balls!

There was also a special mention for Sam Whitmarsh of Astrazeneca who assisted David with his demo. Earlier this year Sam won Most Dedicated Stem Ambassador at the national STEMNET awards ceremony.
