News One of our existing ambassadors, Sam Whitmarsh of Astrazeneca, was awarded a prize for the UK's Most Dedicated STEM Ambassador at the STEMNET Awards Ceremony, which took place at the House of Lords on Monday 21st June 2010. Atkins in Bristol were also shortlisted for the Most Dedicated Employer award. More details. Opportunities for existing STEM Ambassadors Hello and welcome to our existing STEM Ambassadors (formerly SEAs!) Please find below some of the current opportunities for existing STEM Ambassadors in the West of England region (incorporating Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset). For more information on these opportunities contact Claire Dimond (contact details below). If you have completed an activity with schools through your company or through another scheme please do let us know or update your records on the database!We are always looking for case studies so if you have done something recently in a school that you think should be shared please do let us know. A
primary school in Bristol is looking for ambassadors who can
support them with the topic ‘inventions’. This might be by giving a
talk about an invention you work on e.g. aeroplane or mobile phone and
what your job involves. The topic will take place during June 2010. Greenpower
is
a competition in which teams of secondary school students design and
build a car using a provided kit and then race them at a regional heat
with the winning teams competing at the final at Goodwood. The Western
Regional Heat will be held on 27th June 2010 at Castle
Combe near Chippenham. 10 volunteers are needed for various tasks
including checking that the cars and the teams are all prepared for the
race, safety checks and track marshalling; supervising the
race, recovering any cars that become stranded, supervising pit stops
etc. Careers A
school in South Gloucestershire is holding a careers
event for Year 10s on 13th May 2010, from 2-3pm. The
school are looking for ambassadors to host a stand during this period,
promoting their company or sector and talking to students about jobs in
that field. Other opportunities There
are two Science Cafes in Bristol; one at the Tobacco Factory on the last
Monday of the month and the other at the Pierian Centre on the first
Wednesday. They are always looking for speakers. The format consists of
a talk from the speaker for 10-15mins, followed by questions from the
audience. The whole event lasts about an hour in the evening. The
audience is predominantly adults. Contact us if you are interested in
