STEM Induction & DBS Checks

The next step after registering to become a STEM Ambassador is to complete the STEM Induction, all STEM Ambassadors must complete an Induction irrespective of any previous experience working with children. The STEM Induction is available online, it can also be delivered as a 2 hour training session.

Step 1: Complete the Online Induction: Available via STEM Learning is the online Induction. It takes approx. 45 minutes

Step 2: Complete the post Induction quiz: This lets us know that you have completed and understood the Induction materials. Completing the STEM Quiz will generate a DBS link being sent to you.

Using an External ID Verifier to complete your ID Check

If you choose to use an External ID Verifier then please note; some External ID Verifiers may charge for their services. You cannot use anyone within your family to verify your ID. Any person within any of the below professions can be used to verify your ID:

  • HR manager at place of employment (preferably CIPD member)
  • University lecturer/teacher
  • Warrant officer and ranks above (or equivalent ranks)
  • Barrister
  • Chartered accountant
  • Chemist/pharmacist
  • Doctor/dentist
  • Justice of the peace
  • Lawyer/solicitor
  • Legal executive
  • Member of Parliament
  • Police officer
  • Member of a Professional Body e.g. Chartered Engineer

To use an External ID Verifier the applicant must nominate their chosen person within their DBS Application, this will generate an email to the chosen ID verifier. If the nominated person accepts the role of ID Verifier then they will be granted access to the applicants DBS application. The ID Verifier will then be asked to provide details of the applicants ID, those details need to be directly entered into the DBS Application before the application can then be submitted. For this reason ID Checks must take place in front of the ID Verifiers computer.

Using an Existing DBS Check

The STEM Ambassador programme can accept existing DBS Checks if:

  • it is an Enhanced DBS Check
  • it was issued for Child Workforce
  • it was registered by the applicant with the DBS Update Service

We can only use an existing DBS if it meets all 3 of the above criteria. To transfer an existing DBS Check we must see your DBS Certificate and photo ID in person; this would mean coming to a training, development or networking session facilitated by the STEM Hub. Once we have seen your DBS Certificate in person we will use the DBS Update Service to verify whether or not that certificate is still current and acceptable.

We can’t accept any DBS’s that do not meet all 3 of the above criteria. We can’t accept Basic Checks, PVG’s or any other form of security check. The type (Child Workforce) and level (Enhanced) are printed on the DBS Certificate itself, the Update Service is an additional step taken by the applicant.
