Local STEM E&E Provision in the West of England Region

At- Bristol

At-Bristol is a science centre which provides an immersive hands-on learning environment for pre-school, school and college groups. They have a programme of curriculum linked workshops, events and resources in addition to a visit to the science centre itself.

Bristol Zoo Gardens

Bristol Zoo has a range of educational sessions for pre-school, special needs, KS1, KS2, KS3, KS4, A level, FE, and HE looking at topics such as habitats, minibeasts, classification and conservation.

Explorerdome

Explorerdome provide lively, interactive, hands-on science shows brought to you presented inside a portable, inflatable planetarium Dome. The shows are for KS1, KS2, KS3 and KS4 and are linked to the curriculum ranging in topic from space to the body. They also offer chemistry shows.

Bristol City Museum

Bristol City Museum have a range of science-themed workshops that enable young people to get hands on with seeing and touching genuine artefacts such as animals, fossils and minerals. These workshops are aimed at KS1 and 2 but the collections are available for secondary school visits who wish to run their own independent session on classification and taxonomy.

Bristol Festival of Nature

The Bristol Festival of Nature is the UK’s largest celebration of the natural world promoting the understanding of, and encouraging learning about the natural world and environmental issues. Usually the first weekend of June, the Festival has a special schools day where KS2 students can sample the hundreds of activities before the public do.

Medical Sciences Mobile Teaching Unit

The Medical Sciences Mobile Teaching Unit is a HGV lorry that expands in an interactive learning environment that can visit schools to allow students hands-on experience of anatomical models and physiological recording equipment to explore how the body works. Run by staff from the University of Bristol, sessions cover topics on the human body relevant to the curriculum including the heart, lungs and nervous system. 

Bristol ChemLabS

Bristol ChemLabS is the UK’s Centre for Excellence for Teaching & Learning in practical Chemistry at the University of Bristol. It has a programme of lectures, workshops, demonstrations and residential summer courses for secondary school students held in their state of art teaching laboratories. They also offer teacher CPD course and also visit schools to deliver demonstration lectures on various chemistry topics.

Bristol ChemLabS also have chemistry activities for Primary Schools include chemistry workshops, demonstration assemblies, gifted & talented practical chemistry days and primary science lectures. Schools can also enter the Chem@rt writing competition, the Primary Science Online Quiz and keep up to date via the Primary Science Network.

ss Great Britain

The ss Great Britain is open throughout the academic year to school groups and also provides hands-on workshops for both primary and secondary schools. These workshops are cross curricula and are linked to the curriculum. Pre and post visit learning resources are available online as well. 

CREST Awards and CREST Investigators

CREST is the nationwide curriculum enrichment award scheme for STEM. Through CREST, young people explore the nature of STEM by doing their own creative project work. Awards are made at three levels (Bronze, Silver and Gold). At the higher levels, practicing scientists and engineers mentor the projects and the students.

The regional CREST Coordinator for the West of England region is the STEM Learning Enterprise (formerly known as Wessex Setpoint).
