Smarter UK Smarter UK is funded by the Wellcome Trust If there were pills that could make you smarter, would you take them? Should parents give their children brain-enhancing medication? Would you want to remember everything forever? Young people get to discuss these questions and many more through Smarter UK – a facilitated classroom debate for 13-16 year olds that explores the ethical implications of using drugs for cognitive enhancement. Each Smarter UK session starts with a short drama to introduce the issues. This is followed by a facilitated discussion where the young people will be given time to consider the varied and complex issues associated with human enhancement and develop their own opinions. Sessions are delivered by experienced science presenters. The presenters are joined by neuroscience researchers who will bring the latest scientific knowledge to the conversation and are on hand to answer students’ questions. Smarter UK sessions are taking place in Bristol, Cardiff, Cambridge, Glasgow and Oxford between autumn 2011 and spring 2013. Schools interested in hosting Smarter sessions, and neuroscientists interested in getting involved should contact Rebecca Hurwitz (rebecca.hurwitz@graphicscience.co.uk) Smarter was piloted in Bristol and Glasgow in 2009. To find out more about the pilot please visit the Smarter page. Funding from the Wellcome Trust has now enabled Smarter UK to become a nationwide project. An overview for participating neuroscientists is available here.
