Working with Frank Burnet of the University of the West of England, Bristol, we were appointed to assess consultation and public engagement methods available to the Royal Society. The Royal Society wished to adopt a more consultative approach to its work on scientific issues and to involve the public to a greater extent in its events. We were asked to provide an overview of public consultation processes in use within the scientific community, critically evaluate the effectiveness of such processes and to map methods most likely to be of value to the Royal Society. The report informed the subsequent development of the Royal Society's Science in Society programme. |
