At-Bristol was awarded funding from the STFC (Science and Technology Facilities Council) for a two-year project called Earth and Beyond. Through Earth and Beyond, At-Bristol delivered a programme of space science activity days for 11-16 year olds, along with a CPD programme for associated teachers. The programme used a combination of informal learning environments and specialist equipment to increase knowledge, understanding and appreciation of astronomy and space science among the target audiences. In order to enthuse and educate both students and teachers, At-Bristol ran sessions using both their own planetarium and the Faulkes telescope. The Faulkes telescope is situated in Hawaii but can be accessed from the UK and can be used to identify and photograph deep space objects. We independently evaluated both stages of the project through a series of observations and informal interviews, both with pupils during gifted and talented days and teachers during CPD sessions. |
