supporting education ethical emporium

In partnership with the Institute of Education the Nuffield Curriculum Centre, Windfall Digital, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and Science Learning Centre, London we developed ‘Ethical Emporium’, a rich collection of resources for teaching bioethics in the classroom.

This project, which was funded by the Wellcome Trust and NESTA (the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts) aimed to create a new learning landscape by harnessing digital media to engage young people in discussion.

Ethical Emporium takes the form of a dedicated website, featuring resources such as case studies for teaching bioethics in the classroom; curriculum links for ethics and genetics in KS4 and KS5; and background information on teaching ethics such as frameworks, the value of teaching ethics and a practical guide to teaching ethics in the classroom.

The case studies (which foregound associated activities) cover 6 different topics, including: Genes & Antisocial Behaviour; Drugs in Sport; Conservation; Genetic Screening; Modifying Food; and Research Involving Animals. You can access these resources from the ethical emporium site.

The project also consists of a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) element, encouraging teachers to take part in professional development at the Science Learning Centres. Professional development gives teachers an opportunity to engage with new materials, practice new teaching approaches and update their science.
