who we are Becky Williams

             

Becky has worked at Graphic Science since its inception and has seen it expand and grow into a thriving public engagement consultancy. As Content Development Manager, Becky leads on the development of resources and activities across the company’s portfolio of engagement and education projects.

She also takes sole responsibility for the critical formative and summative evaluation of in-house projects and has taken lead responsibility for evaluations of engagement and education projects for external clients, including: EPSRC, STEMNET, At-Bristol/Science Learning Centres South West and the Bristol Natural History Consortium/DEFRA. During evaluative and consultancy work taken on by Graphic Science, Becky leads on report writing, organising and tabulating data, analysing for trends and outcomes and makes a full contribution to idea development, analysis, concluding and recommendation.

Becky is particularly interested in resource development, such as those which enhance science curricula. She has been responsible for developing activities and resources for projects funded by the Wellcome Trust, EPSRC and the Royal Academy of Engineering. Becky has also developed resources for international projects such as: a suite of biodiversity-focused resources for schools in the UK overseas territories (for ARKive); an international poster exhibition about astrochemistry, (for the EU funded LASSIE network); and family resources to support the British Council’s international exhibition ‘Darwin Now’. She has authored guides and case studies of best practice for clients including: STEMNET, At-Bristol and the National Coordinating Centre for Public Engagement (NCCPE). She was also heavily involved in the development of a framework for researchers practising public engagement, with the NCCPE. She has also provided mentoring services to members of the British Science Association in the analysis of qualitative data.

Becky is also responsible for writing funding applications and all outward facing publicity, including the design of newsletters, flyers, posters and other marketing materials.

Before joining Graphic Science Becky worked for three years at the University of the West of England, where she was responsible for the publicity of Research across the Faculty of Applied Sciences. This role gave her first-hand experience of the structure of academia, the internal workings of a University and brought her into close contact with a variety of academic researchers. As part of this role Becky was also responsible for authoring and editing an outward-facing, glossy newsletter ‘Research Matters’ which included profiles of research taking place in the Faculty. She was also responsible for managing the compilation of the Faculty’s Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) submission and managing three website re-development projects (which incorporated extensive consultation with numerous internal stakeholders). During this time she also worked part-time within the Science Communication Unit, managing the web presence, publicity and contributing to public engagement projects. With a background in web development, Becky was also responsible for the design and subsequent maintenance of this website.

Becky has a background in Media with, a degree in Multimedia Journalism from Bournemouth University; NCTJ qualifications in News Writing, Public Affairs and Media Law; and a portfolio of freelance feature writing.  Becky also undertook an MA in New Media, on a part-time basis at the University of the West of England, Bristol which she passed with Merit. The course encapsulated the study of cultural theory, making use of many social science research methods and theoretical frameworks, in order to examine the lived experiences and issues of culture, identity and communication, when applied to social interactions with new technology. Becky is a reviewer for the Wellcome Trust Society Awards.
