Video Profiles for the Sustainable Transport Challenge
Hear from people who are working to make the world a more sustainable place. If you or your students have any questions for any of these STEM Ambassadors then please email us: Ambassadors@graphicscience.co.uk and we will put you in touch with the STEM Ambassador.
Anna
PhD Student at the School of Metallurgy & Materials, University of Birmingham
Did you know that the engines within electric cars contain lots of magnets? When the car reaches the end of it’s life all of these magnets can be extracted and recycled. Anna is a researcher who is looking at ways to separate materials and magnets, and removing any polymer coatings (that make the magnets difficult to recycle). This research aims to ensures that as much material as possible can be re-used rather than just thrown away.
Rachel
Civil Engineer
As a civil engineer Rachel’s role is focused on future-proofing our roads and making sure they’re safe to use, especially bridges. Rachel also chats about the Sustainable Development Goals and how these are important considerations for her work.
Jaime
Project Engineer
All products will eventually reach the end of their life, and will need to be either recycled or responsibly disposed of. Jaime chats about how important it is to consider the products end of the life during the initial design phase, how this applies to his job role in nuclear decommissioning and how it may be important for your vehicle design.
Matt
Sustainable Design Consultant
Matt talks about constructing buildings that can be a home to birds, bees and other pollinating insects alongside people. He also shares how living and travelling more sustainably can have an impact on our wellbeing.
Richard
Senior Asset Engineer – Electrification of Railways
Travelling by rail is one of the most sustainable ways to travel (after walking and cycling), but there is still more that can be done to make our railways even more sustainable! Richard talks about the move away from diesel powered trains, environmental management around the railway and the impact of climate change to our railway infrastructure.
Eloise
Commercial and Procurement Graduate
Eloise chats about her role supporting the logistics of transporting freight related to the nuclear industry as sustainably as possible, including avoiding pirates!
Liz
Civil and Transport Engineer
The sustainable transport hierarchy is essential to creating spaces that encourage healthy and happy living. Liz talks about designing roads and infrastructure that give people the option to live and travel more sustainably.
Wanda
Discipline Lead & Civil Engineer
Wanda is responsible for a team of engineers whose work supports our rail infrastructure. She also speaks about the Sustainable Development Goals and the importance of biodiversity impact assessments, reducing waste and resources by reviewing and utilising existing infrastructure and assets where possible.
