FIRST® LEGO® League in South West England

FIRST® LEGO® League Challenge is a global STEM competition where groups of up to 10 young people, aged between 9 to 16 years, work as a team to explore a given topic and to design, build and program an autonomous LEGO® robot to solve a series of missions. Nationally, FIRST® LEGO® League is delivered by The Institute of Engineering and Technology (The IET). Graphic Science are The IET’s delivery partner for FIRST® LEGO® League Regional Tournaments in Bristol, Gloucestershire and Somerset. Information for Volunteers & Employers

FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL) tournaments are an action packed day of LEGO, innovation, robotics and friendly competition, made possible with the support of local employers and volunteers. The support of our incredible employer sponsors ensures that we can make these events accessible to under-resourced schools, providing much needed support and opportunity for young people who would otherwise not have been able to participate. If you’d like to know more about sponsoring FLL then please get in touch.

Each FLL tournament is supported by teams of volunteers. Volunteer roles include:

  • Judges: assessing student Innovation Projects and their Robot Design. Judges are the friendly face of all FLL tournament days, encouraging student teams to explain their ideas, the research they undertook and their design process.
  • Referees: supervising and scoring the Robot Game. All teams have three chances to compete on the challenge mat, referees are there to provide support and to score the successfully completed missions.
  • Stewards & Room Leaders: supporting the smooth running of the day. An FLL tournament is a busy day, the role of the stewards and room leaders is helping to keep everything on track and cheering on teams.

Volunteer recruitment usually starts in September or October, with all FLL events in the South West advertised on the STEM Ambassadors platform. If you’d like to get involved then please sign-up as a STEM Ambassador here or get in touch if you have any queries
